Cisco Patches Potentially Crippling VoIP Flaws

Cisco late Wednesday patched seven severe vulnerabilities in its widely used internet telephony software that could permit device compromise or system shutdown.

The bugs – rated “highly critical” by vulnerability tracking firm Secunia – were reported in 16 devices from the networking giant’s Unified IP Phone 7900 series, according to a Cisco advisory. Affected phones are those running either the industry standard session initiation protocol (SIP) and/or Cisco’s proprietary Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP).

Four of the VoIP flaws are overflow vulnerabilities, caused by handling errors that could result in the installation of malicious code on a victim’s phone. Another two bugs could permit specially crafted packets to launch DoS attacks. And a final vulnerability may allow privilege escalation.

Telecommuting is Good Business with FreedomIQ VOIP Hosted PBX

FreedomVOICE Systems, a licensed telecommunications carrier specializing in virtual office solutions, has developed a powerful tool to manage telecommuting with their FreedomIQ VOIP hosted PBX.Telecommuting employees are highly mobile, working from home offices, remote work sites, or while traveling. With FreedomIQ Follow-Me-Live call forwarding, incoming phone calls can reach the employee no matter where they are or what type of phone they are using. Since a VOIP hosted PBX uses the internet to transmit calls, the reach of FreedomIQ is not limited to in-office call transfer like a hardwired PBX.

Telecommuting helps recruit and retain valuable workers. According to a survey conducted by LifeCare, one of the largest privately owned employee benefits organizations in the U.S., flexible work arrangements mattered more to personnel than health care. Robert Half International asked CFOs what incentive was the most effective in attracting top accounting candidates. Telecommuting was listed as the top incentive by a surprising 33% of respondents.

The Growth of VoIP and Its Effect on Resellers

Today’s VoIP resellers can rest assured that there’s no shortage of business opportunities being presented by VoIP. The Radicati Group recently forecast that nearly 75% of corporate phone lines will use VoIP within the next two years. Jumping on board are businesses ranging from mom-and-pop shops to blue chip companies such as Bank of America and The New York Times Co. But as competition heats up, and PBX prices decline, many VARs are seeking new ways to win customers — and revenue.

Topping the list of fresh opportunities is VoIP software. “In the past, telephony solutions consisted of actual PBX  hardware,” said Jayanth Angl, a research analyst at Info-Tech Research Group. “But today, things are becoming more software-based. So it’s a different model where VARs are selling system hardware but also selling software licenses, plus additional services.”

It’s a trend currently being played out among today’s top vendors. Take, for example, Microsoft. The Redmond giant expects 100 million business users to make VoIP calls on its Office Communications software within three years. That is more than double the size of the current VoIP market. Two versions of Microsoft’s Office Communications software are now in beta testing. Jeff Raikes, president of Microsoft’s business division, says, “Software is set to transform business phone systems as profoundly as it has transformed virtually every other form of workplace communication.”
